What’s New — Bates Motel

BatesA few months ago I had the opportunity to chat with Freddie Highmore, star of A&E’s new hit prequel series Bates Motel, which shot in the Vancouver area. The young Brit was exceptionally well-mannered, polite and super smart — he’s a straight-A student at Cambridge, speaks fluent French, and is studying Spanish and Arabic. He said he enjoyed his time in Vancouver, mostly because the grey, gloomy skies reminded him of home. As for playing the notorious Norman Bates, he said he sympathized with the budding Psycho:What makes Norman slightly different is his upbringing, and there’s almost this sympathy or empathy for Norman,” he told me. “You think, you could have been so nice, or a great guy if you hadn’t had this odd relationship with your mother, or moved to this town that is very dark and has so many underlying secrets that you’re forced to be brought up in.” To read more, click Freddie’s icon above to go straight to the story, which appears in the latest edition of Emmy Magazine.
